Training's Place at the Library Table

American Libraries November 2008

Be sure to read your copy of American Libraries this month! Paul Signorelli and I wrote a piece titled “Are You Following Me?” about learning and leadership in libraries. Anyone involved in training should read this–more importantly slip a copy under your manager’s door!

If you are not an ALA member you can access full text of American Libraries. You’ll just need to install the ebrary plugin.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback on the article as well as where you see training sitting at the library table.

Lori- Great article! I agree that we are a 'profession in flux.' We have to know it all/ do it all these days, don't we? I have noticed that the job titles, and the descriptions for said titles, are asking for more and more leadership experience. I also like how the article concluded with 'Facilitation, not decision-making.' To me, a good leader is one that is not afraid to let their employees make decisions or take ownership of a program and make it their own. It is empowering to feel that your manager trusts your judgment, that they are there to guide you, offer feedback, and support, but that you are the directional force for the project. That in itself creates new leaders, which is something I hope that PLCMC continues to promote. Well done on the article! Cheers and applause for your well articulated thoughts.
