Workplace Learning & Leadership News

As Paul Signorelli wrote a few weeks ago, “It’s a book!” After two years of research, interviews, and writing, Workplace Learning & Leadership: A Handbook for Library and Nonprofit Trainers is available.

Paul and I worked with an amazing group of contributors who volunteered countless hours letting us interview them about best (and worst) practices in leadership in training.

An excerpt of the book is in the May/June 2011 issue of American Libraries.

My son says learning is the key to happiness!

A few weeks ago the Adventures in Library Instruction Podcast team, Jason, Anna, and Rachel, discussed the book and how it applies to academic librarians on episode 26 of . It was fascinating to listen to their take on it and especially to hear the “aha” moments they had on the show. Jason was also one of the people interviewed for the book.

Paul and I will be signing copies at the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans on Friday evening at the exhibits opening in the ALA Editions booth. We’ll also be at the Learning Round Table Training Showcase on Sunday from 1:30-3:30 where you will have a chance to win a copy of the book in the raffle along with other fabulous prizes. The Training Showcase is something you don’t want to miss if you are involved in any type of library training.

If you are at ALA please stop by and say hi!

ALA CLENE Training Showcase

Sunday was the CLENE Training Showcase where trainers have a chance to showcase best practices in learning and continuing education for libraries.

My display and presentation was about the training I facilitated for my library as part of my Master Trainer program earlier this year. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Customer Experience focuses on how we can train our library employees to give the best possible customer service to our customers.

During the showcase I gave a 10-minute presentation in the speakers’ corner about the training. Due to the poor acoustics, the noise in the room, and the fact that we could not use a microphone, I relied on my previous theater training to project my voice (diaphragmatic breathing) and walked up and down the aisles on each side of the audience so they could hear me better.

Overall the showcase was a hit and we gave away over $2,500 in door prizes. Next year promises to be even bigger and better so mark your calendars for Sunday afternoon of ALA 2010!

Some tips for presenters:

  • Everyone participating will have a 6’ draped table.
  • If you need power, bring an extension cord as your table may not be near the power outlets.
  • Wireless should be available but with all things techy, have a backup plan. Consider screenshots in a cycling PowerPoint or some Camtasia recordings.
  • The more colorful and tacky your display the better. This is not a stuffy event. This is fun! Have you ever been in a room full of boring trainers?
  • Consider bringing give aways: handouts, brochures, flyers, items with your logo.
  • Remember to bring a lot of business cards!
  • Most presenters use a three-panel display board. You can ship this out ahead of time to your hotel or have printed at a nearby Kinkos.
  • CLENE provides refreshments at the Showcase so you won’t go hungry!
  • Make sure you save some time to visit the other displays.

You can view photos of previous showcase’s below. Hope to see you there!
