Watch out ALA, here I come…

It’s hard to believe that just a year ago, I was ready to boycott ALA. Shortly after writing that post, I received a phone call from Pete Bromberg who encouraged me to be part of the change that needs to happen within ALA. I received the same encouragement from many other people…too many to name, but you know who you are.

And now it is with pleasure that I announce that I have been elected to serve on the board of the CLENE (Continuing Library Education Network Exchange) Round Table of ALA.

Thank you CLENE members for electing me to represent you on the Board. I am excited about the opportunity especially having just completed a PR and Marketing Campaign proposal for CLENE. During the next year I am hoping to widely publicize not only CLENE but the benefits and value of continuing education and lifelong learning. It’s my hope that we can increase the status of our profession so that we are seen as leaders and key decision makers within libraries and to ensure that learning continues to be valued.

Extension for Proposals for Training Showcase at ALA

The 6th Annual CLENE Training Showcase: Best Practices in Training Staff Development and Continuing Education will be held on Sunday, July 12, 2009 in Room S106 in McCormick Place South from 1:30-3:30 pm.

Applications are still being accepted for participants and donors. This will be my second year participating and let me tell you it was one of the best events at ALA last year.

The 2009 Training Showcase will feature old favorites and new opportunities!

  • 6′ Tables for participants
  • Resource Exchange Program
  • Speaker Showcase Corner
  • Showcase Sponsorship
  • Networking Niches
  • Refreshments
  • Door Prizes
  • Live streaming and archiving of materials/presentations
  • LITA BIGWIG partnership!

If you are interested in having a display to show off your amazing training talents and accomplishments click here to apply: http://clenert.wufoo.com/forms/clene-training-showcase-participant-application/

If you are interested in being a donor or sponsor click here to apply: http://clenert.wufoo.com/forms/clene-training-showcase-donations-and-sponsorships/

Some tips for presenters:

  • Everyone participating will have a 6’ draped table.
  • If you need power, bring an extension cord as your table may not be near the power outlets.
  • Wireless should be available but with all things techy, have a backup plan. Consider screenshots in a cycling PowerPoint or some Camtasia recordings.
  • The more colorful and tacky your display the better. This is not a stuffy event. This is fun! Have you ever been in a room full of boring trainers?
  • Consider bringing give aways: handouts, brochures, flyers, items with your logo.
  • Remember to bring a lot of business cards!
  • Most presenters use a three-panel display board. You can ship this out ahead of time to your hotel or have printed at a nearby Kinkos.
  • CLENE provides refreshments at the Showcase so you won’t go hungry!
  • Make sure you save some time to visit the other displays.

You can view photos of previous showcase’s below. Hope to see you there!

PR & Marketing Proposal for CLENERT of ALA

The past five months have been brutal! In addition to the normal challenges of work and family life, I took two very demanding classes this semester. Conflict and Communication was an excellent class that I wish I had taken years ago. I wonder though if I had not had so much experience in this area if I would have gotten as much out of the class. The second class was Public Relations Strategies which is the capstone class for the Public Relations track of my program.

The final project for Public Relations Strategies was to create a comprehensive PR campaign for a business or organization. Earlier this year at ALA Midwinter I realized that CLENERT of ALA would be the perfect organization for me to apply these skills to because it is an organization that I firmly support and believe in and this would provide a real benefit to the organization.

Over the past few months I have conducted extensive research, surveys, and focus groups to find out what people look for in a group or organization that supports trainers in libraries and how CLENERT can not only be that organization but spread the word about the value and importance of quality training and learning opportunities in libraries.

The full text of the PR and Marketing proposal is below. You can read it on the screen or click on the link to download a PDF version.

CLENERT Marketing Proposal

By the way CLENERT stands for Continuing Library Education Network Exchange and Round Table, and is the organization to join if you are involved in training and learning within your library. If you can’t remember the name don’t worry. You are not alone. Read the survey to see some of the hilarious guesses for C.L.E.N.E.R.T.

ALA Midwinter Wrap Up

ALA Midwinter 2009 has been over for just over a month now and as I’ve found with other conferences and travel, I get so far behind while I’m away, it gets hard to catch back up.

This was my second ALA event and first time at Midwinter. While ALA Annual is about the programs, ALA Midwinter is about the business of ALA. Although I attended several great programs about technology in libraries, the majority of my time was spent in board meetings. I’ve become more involved in the CLENE (Continuing Library Education Network Exchange) Round Table. I’m currently working on a PR and marketing plan for CLENE that fill fulfill a project requirement for school. I’ve learned from good friend and associate Paul Signorelli that it’s a great time saver when you can use one project for two purposes.

Some of the highlights from Midwinter:

Having a strawberry martini to celebrate the changes to the Emerging Leaders program:

Seeing what to me was the blizzard of 09:

Coming home and seeing my son go crazy over the LIA schwag. Seriously if anyone has more of these necklaces please save them for me!

My coach from my Master Trainer program also lives in Denver so I was able to meet her for dinner and brainstorm a bit on my program – which is due in a few days.

ALA Part V: CLENE Fun and MaintainIT Project Fun

CLENE Training Showcase

I spent Sunday afternoon with fellow trainers at the CLENE Training Showcase. I am new member of CLENE, and let me just say that this is a great group of people! It makes it so much easier to navigate through ALA when you have a relatively small group like this to be a part of.

The showcase was similar in format to the poster session I did on Saturday, participants were at tables around the room with displays and prepared to talk about, i.e. showcase, what they are working on. There was a much larger crowd for the showcase which may have been because members were standing in the lobby encouraging people to come in or because of the raffle for prizes every 15 minutes led by Stacy Schrank.

I was able to use the same display I used on Saturday, and I brought general information about PLCMC and copies of handouts about PLCMC’s Core Competencies program and live online learning to share. I gave away Brarydog magnetic poetry sheets which were a big hit.

My Display for CLENERT Training Showcase

Late Saturday afternoon I attended a train-the-trainer session with Stephanie Gerding and Kam McEvoy given by Brenda Hough and Sarah Washburn of the MaintainIT Project. Here’s a photo of Sarah explaining, Common Craft style, the relationship between WebJunction, MaintainIT Project, and TechSoup.

Afterwards we all went out to dinner in downtown Disney and celebrated Louise Alcorn‘s birthday.Girls Night Out in Downtown Disney/Happy BDay Louise!

Thank you again to Sarah and Brenda for hosting a wonderful evening!
