You haven’t heard much from me for the past month or so because I’ve been creating a new site for the ALA Learning Round Table (formerly known as CLENERT): ALA Learning http://alalearning.org.

The mission of ALA Learning is to provide a thought-provoking resource for those interested in learning and training in libraries. It’s our goal to be your source for training and learning news, information, best practices, and thoughtful discussion.

I am so excited to be working on this site and blogging with:

Peter Bromberg

Maurice Coleman

Betha Gutsche

Marianne Lenox

Bobbi Newman

Lori Reed

Paul Signorelli

Jay Turner

Stephanie Zimmerman

Be sure to check out the presss release announcing the name change of CLENERT to LearnRT. I think we are the first round table of ALA to not use an acronym. If you are not a member now would be a great time to join. ALA’s Learning Round Table is only $20 in addition to your ALA dues.

I really hope people enjoy the new site and find this to be a great resource for libraries!

It’s hard to believe that just a year ago, I was ready to boycott ALA. Shortly after writing that post, I received a phone call from Pete Bromberg who encouraged me to be part of the change that needs to happen within ALA. I received the same encouragement from many other people…too many to name, but you know who you are.

And now it is with pleasure that I announce that I have been elected to serve on the board of the CLENE (Continuing Library Education Network Exchange) Round Table of ALA.

Thank you CLENE members for electing me to represent you on the Board. I am excited about the opportunity especially having just completed a PR and Marketing Campaign proposal for CLENE. During the next year I am hoping to widely publicize not only CLENE but the benefits and value of continuing education and lifelong learning. It’s my hope that we can increase the status of our profession so that we are seen as leaders and key decision makers within libraries and to ensure that learning continues to be valued.

The 6th Annual CLENE Training Showcase: Best Practices in Training Staff Development and Continuing Education will be held on Sunday, July 12, 2009 in Room S106 in McCormick Place South from 1:30-3:30 pm.

Applications are still being accepted for participants and donors. This will be my second year participating and let me tell you it was one of the best events at ALA last year.

The 2009 Training Showcase will feature old favorites and new opportunities!

6′ Tables for participants

Resource Exchange Program

Speaker Showcase Corner

Showcase Sponsorship

Networking Niches

Refreshments

Door Prizes

Live streaming and archiving of materials/presentations

LITA BIGWIG partnership!

If you are interested in having a display to show off your amazing training talents and accomplishments click here to apply: http://clenert.wufoo.com/forms/clene-training-showcase-participant-application/

If you are interested in being a donor or sponsor click here to apply: http://clenert.wufoo.com/forms/clene-training-showcase-donations-and-sponsorships/

Some tips for presenters:

Everyone participating will have a 6’ draped table.

If you need power, bring an extension cord as your table may not be near the power outlets.

Wireless should be available but with all things techy, have a backup plan. Consider screenshots in a cycling PowerPoint or some Camtasia recordings.

The more colorful and tacky your display the better. This is not a stuffy event. This is fun! Have you ever been in a room full of boring trainers?

Consider bringing give aways: handouts, brochures, flyers, items with your logo.

Remember to bring a lot of business cards!

Most presenters use a three-panel display board. You can ship this out ahead of time to your hotel or have printed at a nearby Kinkos.

CLENE provides refreshments at the Showcase so you won’t go hungry!

Make sure you save some time to visit the other displays.

You can view photos of previous showcase’s below. Hope to see you there!

The past five months have been brutal! In addition to the normal challenges of work and family life, I took two very demanding classes this semester. Conflict and Communication was an excellent class that I wish I had taken years ago. I wonder though if I had not had so much experience in this area if I would have gotten as much out of the class. The second class was Public Relations Strategies which is the capstone class for the Public Relations track of my program.

The final project for Public Relations Strategies was to create a comprehensive PR campaign for a business or organization. Earlier this year at ALA Midwinter I realized that CLENERT of ALA would be the perfect organization for me to apply these skills to because it is an organization that I firmly support and believe in and this would provide a real benefit to the organization.

Over the past few months I have conducted extensive research, surveys, and focus groups to find out what people look for in a group or organization that supports trainers in libraries and how CLENERT can not only be that organization but spread the word about the value and importance of quality training and learning opportunities in libraries.

The full text of the PR and Marketing proposal is below. You can read it on the screen or click on the link to download a PDF version.

CLENERT Marketing Proposal

By the way CLENERT stands for Continuing Library Education Network Exchange and Round Table, and is the organization to join if you are involved in training and learning within your library. If you can’t remember the name don’t worry. You are not alone. Read the survey to see some of the hilarious guesses for C.L.E.N.E.R.T.

Last year I wrote a few posts about the Emerging Leaders program in ALA and my frustration with the requirement that applicants hold an MLS. I am happy to say that I found out today that this requirement is being changed. The next round of the Emerging Leaders program will accept applications from library employees. Period.

I found this out in real time, as the vote was taking place, via Twitter. I can’t tell you how thrilled I was to hear the news. ALA and the Emerging Leaders Taskforce is making a huge step in the right direction by opening this program up.

Not only will this open doors for other library workers dedicated to the profession of libraries, but it sends a message that ALA is about libraries and the people who work in them–all the people.
